Third Indian city lights the way with LED pilot milestone

NEW DELHI: The Climate Group India's LED street light pilot in Thane, Maharashtra, reached a major milestone last week as new low carbon LED lighting was installed across the city.

Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) replaced 310 high pressure sodium vapour (HPSV) street lights with low carbon light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in two areas of Thane in Maharsatra, India.

From the project’s initiation in 2010, The Climate Group facilitated the entire process including site selection, providing the specifications, preparation of tender documents, technical evaluation of the bids, and product testing at the UL Lab.

The project is a collaboration between TMC, the Government of India's Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and Maharashtra Energy Development Agency (MEDA) functioning as State Designate Agency (SDA) of BEE for Maharashtra. The project totalled a cost US$150,000 which is equally shared by the Thane Municipality and Indian Ministry of Power.

As the independent and verifiable results from our global LightSavers trials and accompanying public surveys reveal in our Lighting the Clean Revolution report, there is compelling evidence that many commercially-available, outdoor LED products offer high quality light, durability, and significant electricity savings in the range of 50-70%.

The success of Thane follows Kolkata and Haldia in West Bengal, which have both featured LED trials and already received glowing reports from residents who live in areas lit by the new LED street lighting.

Aditi Dass, Director of Technology Programs, The Climate Group, said: “We are proud to have been associated with Thane City Government since 2010. Thane is the third Indian city to become a part of The Climate Group’s global LED project and by partnering on this pioneering initiative, the city is taking a great step forward in leading India’s transition to more energy efficient and low carbon lighting, and with it, claiming its title as an innovative city that is leading India’s clean revolution.”
