The Climate Group welcomes new India Executive Director
- 03 April 2014
NEW DELHI: The Climate Group has appointed Krishnan Pallassana to the role of Executive Director, The Climate Group India.
Krishnan joins The Climate Group from Actionaid International, where he was Country Director in Afghanistan, during which he served on the global strategic oversight team on resilience and climate change.
Throughout his several years at Actionaid, Krishnan was instrumental in helping the organization with its Afghanistan country strategy, organisational restructure and the repositioning of the brand. He also worked on a number of international missions, including work in Nepal, Cambodia and Bangladesh.
His appointment comes in the wake of the latest IPCC report released earlier this week, which highlighted the impacts climate change will have on the world's communities, resources and economy. The Climate Group responded to the report with a continued call on business and government leaders to demonstrate leadership, and Krishnan’s appointment will help guide Indian leaders to achieve a prosperous and low carbon future.
Speaking about his new role, Krishnan Pallassana said: “I am very excited to be joining The Climate Group, especially at such an important time for India as it becomes a crucial voice in the global climate change agenda. I am looking forward to working with The Climate Group’s members from global business leaders to proactive Indian state and regional governments.
“With the current political transition and larger demand for change, there is the very real prospect that India could become a low carbon role model for other nations. We need an enabling policy environment to drive low carbon initiatives which could lead to higher investment in clean energy and carbon efficient processes. This approach will unleash the hidden potential in rural India, opening up opportunities to over 400 million people to optimize their productivity and enhance their quality of life.”
Krishnan took office on April 1 and has already identified one of his first priorities: showcasing to government and business leaders the results of the off-grid energy distribution and urban LED public lighting projects The Climate Group has already championed in India. He will lead the Indian team in stressing the need for investment to scale up clean and efficient technologies throughout India, and highlighting the benefits they will bring.
Mark Kenber, CEO, The Climate Group, said: “We are delighted to welcome Krishnan to the team in India. His appointment comes at a critical time in the climate change agenda following the IPCC reports released this year and the new universal climate agreement in Paris 2015, and also reflects the potential of India as a growing global leader in the low carbon economy.”
