EU's Connie Hedegaard, Arnold Schwarzenegger, in search of Europe’s top climate solutions
- 11 February 2013
BRUSSELS: Connie Hedegaard, EU Commissioner for Climate Action, has launched a new contest calling for innovative solutions to the climate challenge.
Starting from today, The World You Like Challenge welcomes contest submissions of low carbon success stories from across the EU.
Solutions can range from energy-saving buildings to game-changing production processes that are helping slash greenhouse gas emissions.
The Challenge aims to provide a platform to showcase the many existing low carbon projects across the EU as well as honor the most effective ones.
From May, visitors can vote for the most creative, practical and effective initiatives on world-you-like.eu. Of the most popular projects, a jury headed by Connie Hedegaard will choose three winners to be announced at the Sustainia Award Ceremony in Copenhagen, in October 2013.
Commissioner Hedegaard said: "The Challenge is a great opportunity to move beyond mere talking about climate change. By submitting your project, you help us show that building a world we like with a climate we like is both feasible and affordable.”
Arnold Schwarzenegger, Chair of Regions20 and Honorary Chair of Sustainia said: “Solutions are transforming our homes, reshaping our cities, and bringing new ideas to entire communities. By sharing what is already working and pushing for new innovations, we will ensure sustainable growth and job growth at the same time.”
Commissioner Hedegaard added: “By joining forces, Sustainia and the European Commission wish to raise awareness of the many sustainable alternatives available to industries, companies, regulators and consumers not only in the EU, but across the globe.”
The contest is part of the EU’s A world you like. With a climate you like. campaign which was launched in October 2012. The campaign aims to encourage new ideas and highlight current solutions for achieving the EU objective of 80-95% emission reduction by 2050.
