BT releases Better Future strategy: a sustainability template for successful businesses to follow

LONDON: One of the UK’s largest and most influential telecommunications companies, BT, has unveiled a three point strategy that aims to improve customers’ lives and society as a whole, setting a bold template other businesses could follow.

On May 29, the telecom giant released its Better Future strategy, a report demonstrating that sustainability and carbon reduction are at the fore of BT's agenda.

BETTER BUSINESS

The report highlights the important role businesses can play in tackling climate change, while illustrating the progress BT has made to date.

Last year, a full three years ahead of its plans, BT achieved its goal of cutting company emissions by 80%. In 2012-13, the company also decreased energy consumption by 3.3%. Such successes scored BT yearly savings of £33 million.

Niall Dunne, Chief Sustainability Officer, BT, said: “Our Better Future programme signals BT’s evolution to a new model in which every part of the business and every employee has a role to play in realizing our visions and achieving our goals to create a better business with a better future. It’s a long-term commitment, focusing on what we do best – bring together our networks and our technology with the expertise of our people to make a better world.”

NET GOOD

Although the tripartite strategy contains 2020 goals for ‘Connected Society’ and ‘Improving Lives’, the critical corner with respect to climate action is ‘Net Good’. An ambitious plan, its focus is enabling individuals to live within the constraints of the planet’s limited resources through efficient BT products and services.

Net Good's stated goal for 2020 is to help customers reduce their carbon emissions by at least three times the total carbon impact of BT's business.

At present, 28% of the company’s carbon emissions are due to customers using its products, a figure which is considerably higher than the 8% caused by BT's own operations. The company is hopeful that improved services, such as video conferencing, will reduce the need for company travel and hence help customers to tackle their carbon footprint.

LEADERSHIP

As part of the strategy, BT monitors the emissions and reduction efforts of its suppliers. The report found:

  • 57% of its suppliers have climate change policies
  • 45% monitor emissions
  • 39% have established targets for climate change

Set at the heart of a company’s strategy, it has the potential to demonstrate that dramatically cutting emissions is not only possible, but is in fact the key to successful business performance. Hopefully BT’s example will provide a template for others to follow.”
