110,000 American jobs announced in clean energy economy surge

NEW YORK: An expected 110,000 new American jobs could be generated by the 300 clean energy and transportation projects that were announced in 2012, with the states of California, North Carolina and Florida leading the way.

Clean energy transport sector projects led the surging green job growth in 2012, followed by clean energy generation such as solar and wind, manufacturing work and energy efficiency projects.

Overall almost 16,000 clean energy and transportation jobs were announced in the last quarter of 2012, which is up from 10,000 in the third quarter.

The figures come from a new report by Environmental Entrepreneurs (E2), entitled Clean Energy Jobs Quarterly Report: Q4 2012 and the year in review.

Judith Albert, Executive Director, E2, said: “It’s now crystal-clear that clean energy and clean transportation are helping our economy recover. The projects and job announcements like we saw in 2012 can continue – as long as we don’t let smart energy policies get hijacked by special interests.”

The states that came out of top for clean energy job generation were:

1. California
2. North Carolina
3. Florida
4. Illinois
5. Connecticut

Amy Davidsen, US Executive Director, The Climate Group: “President Obama’s recently announced goals to double our clean energy and efficiency are helping drive strong growth in the industry which is having a positive knock-on effect on creating quality jobs for Americans.

“With Arizona, New York, Michigan, Texas and Oregon tailing up the top 10, the E2 report is showing positive clean energy jobs growth across the nation, a clean revolution that is fueling the American economy.”
