Swiss Re’s David Bresch and Andreas Spiegel will be guests in a live Twitter Q&A on August 20, to discuss what urban resilience means to countries, industries and communities, ahead of Swiss Re’s event at Climate Week NYC next month. Join us on #CWNYC from 14:00 to 15:00 BST.

Urban resilience is a topic increasingly high on global decision-makers' agendas, since for the first time in human history more people live in cities than in rural areas. The United Nations expects 6.3 billion people--68%--of the world’s population, to be living in urban areas by 2050, with the highest increase occurring in high growth markets. Many of these cities are located on the coast and are currently threatened by floods, storms, earthquakes and other natural hazards.

The vibrancy of these cities is a key driver for economic development, but the growing concentration of people, values and infrastructure also means the loss potential in urban areas is high. At the same time the gap between economic and insured losses is large because insurance penetration is relatively low and city infrastructure often not insured at all. Risk exposure faced by the world’s metropolitan areas also remains underexplored, largely due to the lack of detailed hazard information and poor data quality.

David Bresch, Head Sustainability and Political Risk Management, Swiss Re, said: “Key to climate resilience is how well urban societies are able to cope with the financial consequences of a disaster, which includes access to the requisite funding for relief, recovery and reconstruction. Swiss Re can offer risk transfer solutions that help bridge the gap between economic and insured losses and reduce the financial burden on local communities.

“We partner with businesses, governments and civil society to strengthen the resilience of local communities and protect them against the risks in a changing climate.”

David Bresch, Head Sustainability and Political Risk Management, and Andreas Spiegel, Senior Climate Change Adviser, will be live on Twitter to answer questions on urban resilience and how the global re/insurer helps promote climate-resilient development around the world.

The live Twitter session will take place Tuesday, August 20, from 15:00 to 16:00pm CET (14:00 to 15:00 BST). It forms part of The Climate Group's Clean Revolution Campaign and aims to mobilize leadership on topics in focus at the upcoming Climate Week NYC.

To participate in this event, log onto Twitter and address questions to @DavidBresch and @AndreasSpiegel1 or to @ClimateGroup using the hashtag #CWNYC.
